Reliability is a top concern for many car shoppers, but even more now with rising vehicle prices and repair costs. Well, it’s that time of the year again when trusted U.S. magazine Consumer Reports publishes its annual auto reliability rankings.
These rankings are based on data collected on more than 330,000 vehicles as reported by their owners, covering the 2000-2023 model years as well as some early 2024 models. Twenty potential trouble areas are considered (engine, transmission, EV battery, charging, body hardware, paint and trim, etc.), and then a score is awarded on a 100-point scale.
Interestingly, Consumer Reports finds that fully electric vehicles prove more reliable than plug-in hybrids, but less reliable than hybrids and ICE-powered vehicles. The Tesla Model Y is recommended for the first time, while the Ford Mustang Mach-E has regained its CR recommendation after some of the initial issues were addressed.
For 2024, Lexus (79), Toyota (76), MINI (71), Acura (70), Honda (70), Subaru (69), Mazda (67), Porsche (66), BMW (64) and Kia (61) make up the top 10 brands with the highest predicted reliability. However, it must be noted that Consumer Reports has insufficient data or the manufacturer has too few models for them to rank Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lucid, Maserati, Mitsubishi and Polestar.
You can take the rankings with a grain of salt if you want. Now, check out the top 10 most reliable 2024 models according to Consumer Reports in this photo gallery.
