2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class: Empty Nest Syndrome

The new C has a brand new tail end, although the family resemblance with the previous generation remains.

Great news! The passenger compartment is brand new.

The turn signals on the rearview mirrors are brand new.

The air intakes, located on the lower part of the front end, are almost as big as the headlights.

Gangway! A C400 can really move!

The C400’s turbocharged V6 develops 329 horsepower and 354 lbs.-ft. of torque.

As for the C300’s 2.0-litre in-line four, it offers 241 horsepower and 273 lbs.-ft. of torque.

Obviously, both of the C-Class’ available engines run only on super unleaded (91 octane rating).

The materials are of excellent quality and, in the C400 that we test drove, the red and the greys and blacks blend seamlessly.

The indicator dials are simple and efficient.

The central screen is a good size and easy to consult. However, it doesn’t have a touch screen, which is surprising considering it looks like a tablet.

The Touchpad is a sort of mouse/keypad upon which you can even write with your finger. Personally, I found this accessory perfectly useless and needlessly complex. Mercedes would have been better off investing its money in a GPS that works properly.

Fortunately, many of the commands are duplicated on the dashboard.

The Agility System lets you choose between Eco, Comfort, Sport and Sport + modes.

The C400 was equipped with beautiful classic black veined wood trim.

The rear bench is comfortable and offers more space than in front. However, getting in and out will take some doing.

The fifth generation’s trunk is a few litres larger than before.

The 40-20-40 folding seatbacks add to the vehicle’s versatility.
