Ford Fusion Sales Nearing 200,000... A First for Ford Since 2004
In 2004, Ford was in a happy place. Gas prices were still reasonable, and gas-chugging vehicles such as the Expedition, Excursion, Cobra Mustangs, and Lincoln pickup trucks were all selling well. But then, gas prices rose to all-time highs, stunning the lucrative large vehicle market. After that, a recession sent would-be buyers scurrying from dealerships to unemployment lines, shrinking sales even further.
Which is why Ford is undoubtedly quite happy to see this: 196,590. That’s the number of Ford Fusion’s sold in 2010, and it’s the highest number for a passenger car for the Blue Oval since 2004, when both the Focus and Taurus bested 200,000 annual sales. Up 21.5 percent since last year, Fusion sales are expected to continue rising, and should easily surpass that magical 200,000 mark by the end of the year. Just for a sense of perspective, as of the end of November, Toyota’s Camry currently holds the sales record for this year, with 296,581 units, while Honda’s Accord can lay claim to second place with 253,073 units. Corolla and Civic trail with 244,024 and 231,995 units respectively, with the Nissan Altima rounding out the top five with 206,247 units. Interestingly, the sixth place Hyundai Sonata, having just crossed the 200,000 unit mark for the first time, has seen an incredible 90,000 unit sales increase over last year.
