BMW Issues Stop-Sale Order on 1-Series

Given their reputation for Teutonic reliability and overzealous engineering, you’d be excused for expressing more than a little surprise at this latest revelation: BMW is issuing a stop-sale order on their diminutive 1-series.

Apparently, certain 1-series models manufactured before May of 2010 exhibit a potential fire risk in the form of a seat belt tensioning system that is mounted too close to the B-pillar. In the event of a collision, the seat belt tensioner slows the belt’s progression via friction, creating heat. This can overheat the tensioner’s mount and the surrounding area, increasing the risk of fire.
