The Best Midsize SUVs in 2025
Looking at all the entry-level midsize SUVs available on the market, the team at The Car Guide has identified the three models that represent the best buys for 2025. We're talking about SUVs aimed at families looking for more space than in a compact model but not necessarily with three rows of seats.
After two years with the same top 3, there are multiple changes for 2025, starting with the discontinuation of the Toyota Venza. Also, the Honda Passport, our runner-up from the past two years, is now out of the picture.

1. Hyundai Santa Fe

The latest Santa Fe features bold styling, whether you like it or not. It’s also larger (now with standard three-row seating), more versatile and more sophisticated than its predecessor. What's more, it takes a giant step forward in terms of comfort, offers an ideal driving position and shows great balance in terms of ride and handling.
Delivering 231 hp, entry-level models (under $50,000) feature a highly efficient hybrid powertrain and achieve a combined 6.5-7.0 L/100 km. Higher up the range is a turbocharged 2.5-litre engine with more power but sadly a dual-clutch transmission that isn’t the best match.
A smart interior layout, long list of features and amenities for the price, and Hyundai's generous warranty are other reasons why we're elevating the Santa Fe to the top of our best buys in the midsize SUV segment for 2025.
2. Subaru Outback

The Outback was our top pick of recent years, but as the current generation draws to a close, we've chosen to relegate it to second place, albeit right behind its Korean rival. Don't get us wrong, this muscular, high-riding Japanese wagon still has plenty going for it and continues to trump most competitors in many respects. However, the lack of a hybrid variant is disappointing (this will change with the next generation).
The 182-horsepower, naturally aspirated engine reserved for entry-level models proves adequate enough and reasonably frugal. A 260-horsepower turbocharged engine is the stronger, more compelling option, although fuel consumption increases at the same time.
Always part of the package is Subaru’s excellent all-wheel drive system combined with a beautifully tuned suspension that doesn't compromise handling, making the Outback a comfortable and confidence-inspiring family hauler for Canadians. And don’t forget the rugged Wilderness model which is ideal for venturing even further off paved roads.
3. Kia Sorento

Spacious, nicely finished and offering a lot of bang for your buck, the Sorento a.k.a. the Telluride’s little brother is good enough for third place in the segment. Along with the Santa Fe, it's one of the few midsize SUVs to offer up to seven seats as well as hybrid powertrains.
The cosmetic changes and new dashboard introduced for 2024 are now found in the Sorento Hybrid (227 hp) and Sorento PHEV (261 hp). Two gasoline engines (191 and 281 hp) are also available. Interior space is commendable, especially when it comes to second-row legroom and overall cargo capacity. Go with the X-Pro model if you need to tow up to 4,500 lbs or if you're looking for a more off-road-focused Sorento with extra ground clearance.
Please note that we had not yet been able to test drive the new Nissan Murano at the time of writing. For more information and ratings, don’t miss our Best Buys section.
