GM, Ford, Toyota and Hyundai Shine in 2024 Canadian Auto Sales

Many automakers have now posted their new vehicle sales results for 2024, so we can tell you about some of the winners in Canada.

General Motors was the industry market share leader for the second year in a row, capturing 15.4 percent of the market—its highest share since 2010—with 294,315 vehicles sold and an 11.9 percent sales increase. Cadillac and GMC each had their best sales year ever.

Boosted by the launch of new models, primarily the Chevrolet Equinox EV, GM managed to sell 31,967 electric vehicles in the country last year, up 109 percent from 2023.

Ford came in second among manufacturers, selling 279,221 new vehicles nationwide in 2024, which marks an increase of 16.1 percent. It’s also the best-selling automotive brand in Canada for 16 years running.

Unsurprisingly, the F-Series (133,857 units) was the No. 1 selling pickup in the country for the 59th consecutive year, as well as the best-selling vehicle for the 15th year in a row. Ford’s electric vehicles were up 66.1 percent from the previous year, with the Mustang Mach-E outselling the gas-powered Mustang nearly three to one.

Toyota, which celebrated its 60th anniversary in Canada in 2024, posted an all-time vehicle sales record of 238,933 vehicles sold. The RAV4 (77,556 units) also reached a record year and remained the best-selling passenger vehicle in the country.

Remarkably, electrified vehicles including hybrids and EVs now represent 49.2 percent of the Japanese manufacturer’s overall vehicle sales, with 117,528 units sold. No other legacy automaker is even close to that percentage.

Another winner in 2024 was Hyundai, which recorded the best sales year in its 41-year history in Canada. The Korean giant sold 131,715 new vehicles—up 13.9 percent from 2023—and in the process beat Honda/Acura for the first time, not to mention Stellantis. While many dealer lots seem to be full of unsold IONIQ 5 electric crossovers, over 13,000 units found a taker in the past twelve months.

Speaking of Stellantis, the various setbacks experienced by the automaker in 2024 resulted in a sales drop of 18 percent. The 129,945 new vehicles collectively sold by Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge, Ram, Alfa Romeo and Fiat didn’t even match the total of Ford’s F-Series truck alone.
