Volkswagen ID.4 Goes Back on Sale Following Months-Long Halt

The Volkswagen ID.4 was arguably one of the losers of 2024 in the electric vehicle segment. Sales have been put on halt since late September due to a door handle issue that may cause the doors to open unexpectedly even when the vehicle is moving.

A recall was also announced for a bit more than 20,000 units in Canada, covering the 2021-2024 model years. We’re happy to report that the company finally has the required door handle parts to fix all those existing ID.4s that were subject to the recall and sell vehicles that are currently in dealer lots, once repaired.

It also means that production of the ID.4 in Chattanooga, Tennessee will resume in the coming weeks, although no exact date was specified.

In a statement, Volkswagen said it looks forward to “re-instating the ID.4 to its prior position as one of the best-selling electric vehicles in the U.S. and Canada” and making it even more attainable with “some highly competitive lease offers.” Details should be announced shortly.

Right now, customers have until January 31 to take advantage of 4.49 percent APR on a 12- or 24-month lease—or 0 percent when financing for up to 60 months. In both cases, Volkswagen offers a credit of $5,000 in addition to government incentives.

Too bad for the ID.4, Quebec’s generous EV rebate dropped from $7,000 to $4,000 on January 1 and will be suspended for at least two months on February 1 due to a lack of funds. As for the $5,000 rebate from Ottawa, there’s a chance it will be adjusted or axed following this year’s federal election.

As a reminder, the ID.4 received a substantial update for 2024. The base rear-wheel-drive variant provides a range of 332 km. This figure increases to 468 km in Pro trim. There’s also a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive variant that can cover 423 km on a full charge. The 2025 model is not on sale yet.
