Hyundai IONIQ 5 Drives Into Guinness World Records
The Hyundai IONIQ 5 has racked up a number of accolades and awards since launching four years ago. There’s now one more to add to the list: a Guinness World Record for the Greatest altitude change by an electric car.
The event was organized by Hyundai Motor India Limited and driven by the professional team from Evo India. The IONIQ 5 achieved an unprecedented altitude change of 5,802 metres.

Accomplished over 14 days, with the route covering a distance of more than 4,900 km, the journey began at India’s highest drivable point, Umling La in Leh Ladakh, located 5,799 metres above sea level, and finished in Kuttanad, Kerala, situated 3 metres below sea level.
Between the two locations, Hyundai’s electric crossover tackled challenging terrain and extreme climatic conditions, from freezing temperatures and steep mountain passes in the Himalayas to high heat and humidity in the coastal regions of Kerala bordering the Indian Ocean.
“The IONIQ 5’s performance in such extreme conditions reflects its engineering prowess and durability,” said Unsoo Kim, Managing Director at Hyundai Motor India Limited. “At Hyundai, we are dedicated to pushing boundaries and setting new benchmarks in e-mobility, and this record further reinforces our vision.”
It’s worth pointing out that the record-setting IONIQ 5 was not an updated 2025 model, meaning it still had the 77.4kWh battery instead of the new and larger 84kWh pack. Click on the link to learn more about other changes to the IONIQ 5 lineup for 2025.
