Chevrolet’s New EVs Recalled for Making Either Too Much Noise or Not Enough

Beyond no longer having to maintain an internal combustion engine and fill it up with expensive fuel, the beauty of an electric vehicle for many is the quiet and relaxed driving experience that comes with it. There is, however, a safety hazard when things get too quiet.

Just ask Chevrolet. The company has to recall a large majority of Equinox EV crossovers and Silverado EV pickups that have been sold in Canada so far. We’re talking about 5,192 units and 338 units, respectively, all from the 2025 model year.

You see, a software problem could cause the pedestrian warning system not to work properly. In the case of the Equinox EV, the vehicle may produce too much sound under certain conditions. New Canadian regulations require electric vehicles to make sounds at certain levels when operating at low speeds.

When it comes to the Silverado EV, it’s the opposite. The vehicle may not produce enough sound when stationary. The same Canadian regulations require electric vehicles to make a minimum sound level when they’re not moving in order to minimize the risk of injury for other road users, particularly pedestrians and cyclists.

Chevrolet dealers will need to update the body control module software on recalled Equinox EV and Silverado EV units. Alas, this update cannot be performed over the air.

Affected owners will receive a mailed notice in the coming weeks. In the meantime, you can visit GM’s recall website to check if your EV is part of the list or to get more details.

Remember, for the 2025 model year, a new Silverado EV configuration allows drivers to travel even longer distances with a full charge—up to a GM-estimated 792 km to be exact.

Chevrolet is also adding a mid-grade LT model between the base WT (Work Truck) and top-line RST. This one offers a range of up to 657 km and boasts DC fast charging capability up to 300 kW. It generates 645 horsepower and 765 lb-ft of torque in WoW (Wide Open Watts) mode, good enough to haul up to 1,800 lbs and tow up to 12,500 lbs.
