Mazda Leads Final List of IIHS Top Safety Pick+ Award Winners
The U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has finalized its list of the safest vehicles for 2024, which includes both 2024 models and a few 2025 models.
Since the preliminary list was announced earlier this year, 10 new winners of the higher-tier TOP SAFETY PICK+ award have been added, including the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Infiniti QX60, Mazda CX-70 and CX-70 PHEV, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and GLC, Rivian R1S, Subaru Forester, Toyota Tundra and Volvo XC90 T8.
Meanwhile, nine other vehicles have received the base TOP SAFETY PICK award, namely the Audi Q8, Ford F-150 (crew cab and extended cab), Infiniti QX80, Kia K4, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Nissan Kicks, as well as the Toyota Corolla and Crown Signia.
In order to qualify for either award in 2024, vehicles need good ratings in the small overlap front and updated side tests, an acceptable or good rating in the pedestrian front crash prevention evaluation and acceptable- or good-rated headlights across all trim levels. Furthermore, a good rating in the original moderate overlap front test is enough to qualify for a TOP SAFETY PICK, but a good or acceptable rating in the updated test is needed for the “plus.”
Mazda boasts eight TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards—more than any other brand—showing that safety goes hand in hand with the driving excellence the Japanese company is renowned for. In addition to the CX-70 and CX-70 PHEV, the IIHS gave its highest accolade to the Mazda3, Mazda3 Sport, CX-30, CX-50, CX-90 and CX-90 PHEV.
"Mazda once again demonstrated its commitment to safety, acting quickly to meet the tougher standards we adopted for the 2024 TOP SAFETY PICK+ award," IIHS President David Harkey said.
