Hyundai’s Next Step in Hydrogen Tech Previewed by INITIUM Concept
Along with a few other automakers, Hyundai sees a future for hydrogen both in commercial and passenger vehicles. Following the Tucson FCEV and Nexo, the Korean giant is about to introduce the third generation of its fuel cell technology.
Unveiled this week at Hyundai Motorstudio Goyang near Seoul, the INITIUM (a Latin word meaning ‘beginning’ or ‘first’) is a concept that previews a new production model set to debut in the first half of 2025.

The SUV-like vehicle embodies Hyundai’s new ‘Art of Steel’ design language. The rugged-looking exterior integrates the ‘+’ symbol that’s part of the logo of HTWO, a division of Hyundai Motor developing future hydrogen solutions.
Strong lines and shapes can be found all around, especially on the sides where thick, contrasting fender flares cover massive 21-inch wheels featuring an aero-optimized design. Up top is a unique roof rack system emphasizing the versatility of INITIUM.
Hyundai says development focused on three primary aspects: superior driving range and enhanced performance, a spacious interior and cargo area, and unique convenience and safety features distinctive to hydrogen cars. The second-row seats are particularly roomy and accommodating, with seatbacks offering a large reclining angle for increased comfort.
Little has been said about the technical aspects, however. What we know is that the concept uses an electric motor producing up to 150 kW (201 horsepower, 50 more than the Nexo), enhanced battery capacity and two large hydrogen tanks. Per Hyundai’s calculations, the targeted driving range exceeds 650 km (versus 612 km with the Nexo).
Through the infotainment system, an FCEV-specific route planner helps users find hydrogen refuelling stations along the way. We don’t need to remind you how incredibly rare these are in North America. Oh, and similar to Hyundai’s battery-electric vehicles, the INITIUM has the ability to power and charge various household appliances and personal devices via a Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) feature.
“Hyundai Motor’s clear, unwavering commitment to hydrogen over the past 27 years is rooted in our belief in its potential as a clean, accessible and therefore fair energy source for everyone,” President and CEO Jaehoon Chang said. “We are dedicated to pioneering a future where hydrogen is used by everyone, in everything, and everywhere. We invite you to join us on this journey.”
