Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid May Experience Loss of Braking Power
Owners of a 2023 or 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid may experience a software glitch that could temporarily reduce their vehicle’s braking performance.
It’s recently been discovered that a sudden change in brake pedal feel and travel may occur when the brakes are applied during a turn. This is apparently an electronic issue and has nothing to do with hardware.
Since reduced braking capacity can cause extended stopping distances and increase the risk of a crash, Toyota will recall approximately 5,500 Corolla Cross units in Canada and over 40,000 in the U.S., all of them with a hybrid powertrain. Those with the 2.0-litre gas engine are not affected.
A software update to the stability control system’s ECU is required, according to the recall notice, but it needs to be performed by a technician at a local dealer.
Last year, Toyota had to recall a larger number of units because the passenger-side front airbag may not deploy properly in the event of a crash. A manufacturing error in the dashboard was said to be the reason why.
Owners can check out Toyota Canada’s recall database for more details and see if their vehicle is on the list.
Overall, the Corolla Cross remains one of the best subcompact crossovers on the market and a smart purchase for a small family with a tight budget. The highly efficient hybrid variant (combined 5.6 L/100 km) makes it even more compelling, hence the strong demand and longer delivery times.
