New Autobox Pushes Toyota GR Corolla North of $60,000

In case you didn’t know already, the 2025 Toyota GR Corolla benefits from a few upgrades and one notable addition, namely an eight-speed automatic transmission. It’s now on sale in Canada, and likely more expensive than you ever thought a Corolla could be.

The lineup includes three models and all of them feature Toyota’s latest multimedia system with an 8-inch touchscreen, 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster with customizable layout, and the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite of safety and driver assistance technologies.

The base GR Corolla Core starts at $51,475 including a whopping $3,560 freight, PDI, dealer and other fees, an increase of just over $1,000 from 2024. Granted, it now gets a standard heated steering wheel, brake cooling ducts and an extra 22 lb-ft of torque for a total of 295 lb-ft. The body only comes in Black or White, mind you.

Next up is the new-for-2025 GR Corolla Premium, which replaces the Circuit Edition and features a standard carbon fibre roof, vented hood and matte black wheels. Two more body colours are available with this model, one of which is the popular Supersonic Red. When selecting the six-speed manual gearbox, complete with an updated clutch system providing a snappier clutch pedal operation feel, the all-inclusive price amounts to $59,477.

Want to get rid of the clutch and enjoy the new automatic transmission with paddle shifters instead? That will cost you an additional $2,220, bringing the total to $61,697 before tax. Yep, you read that right.

Unlike the autobox in the GR Supra and GR86, which changes gears based on the car’s reactions including speed and deceleration, this one is able to detect throttle and brake pedal pressure in order to anticipate the optimum time to shift even before the car reacts to anything, as Toyota explains. Four drive modes can be selected including Sport, Normal, ECO and Custom, and the new unit also comes with a transmission oil cooler and launch control system.

Before we wrap this up, it’s worth pointing out that the 2025 GR Corolla sports a revised front bumper, new interior trim elements on select surfaces and controls for a sportier look and feel, plus a new head-up display and GR Sport suede seats in Premium models. What’s more, enhanced suspension components and tuning improve stability in corners.

The Car Guide will inevitably get the opportunity to test drive this automatic-equipped GR Corolla in the coming months, so don’t miss our review.
