Volkswagen ID.4 Door Recall Expands to Over 20,000 Units in Canada

Remember those faulty doors on the Volkswagen ID.4 that can pop open while driving? Last year the automaker had to stop sales and announce a safety recall to address the issue.

In March, only 1,668 units from the 2023 model year were affected in Canada. Then, in April, 2,519 additional ID.4 crossovers from 2021-2022 were added to the list. Well, guess what? The recall has expanded once more and now involves 20,602 units covering the entire generation (2021-2024). That's every single ID.4 sold so far across the country, whether they were built in Germany or the U.S.

The problem is the same. In some cases, water could leak into the door handles. If this happens, the doors could open unexpectedly while driving. The recall notice posted by Transport Canada also says that the problem could cause a clicking noise that sounds like a door being locked or unlocked.

Volkswagen dealers will need to inspect and, if necessary, replace the door handles that may allow water in. Along with that, they will update the vehicle software.

Affected owners will receive a letter by mail later this fall.

In the past few months alone, two other recalls were announced for the ID.4. One aims to fix a software problem that could cause the instrument cluster and centre display to reset or not to work. In addition, the rear-view camera image may not display when the transmission is shifted into reverse. A bit more than 8,000 units are affected in Canada.

The second is about the nuts that secure the passenger-front airbag inflator, which may not have been properly tightened. As a result, the airbag may not inflate properly in a crash. Luckily, only 207 vehicles in Canada are part of this recall.
