Several Ford Vehicles With Faulty Valves May Need Engine Replacement

Ford has to recall a large number of vehicles from the 2021 model year because their intake valves may not have been manufactured properly and could break over time.

Approximately 90,000 units are part of the recall in the U.S. and nearly 12,000 in Canada. Affected models include the Ford Bronco, Edge, Explorer and F-150 as well as the Lincoln Aviator (also 2022) and Nautilus, but only those equipped with a 2.7L or 3.0L EcoBoost engine.

Broken valves would cause the engine to run rough and likely result in a loss of power to the wheels. The engine could also stall. In any case, drivers would first be alerted by the Check Engine light turning on.

The problem is serious enough that Ford will tell its dealers to inspect and replace the engine as necessary, not just the improperly manufactured intake valves. It’s probably safe to assume that only a tiny fraction of the recall population will need a new engine.

Affected owners will receive a mailed notice in the coming weeks. In the meantime, you can visit Ford Canada’s recall website to find out if your particular vehicle is involved.
