2025 GMC Terrain Follows Chevy Equinox’s Lead With Major Redesign

With the Chevrolet Equinox ushering in a new generation for 2025, it was only a matter of time before the GMC Terrain followed suit. The first units, in new Elevation trim, will go on sale toward the end of this year. The more rugged Terrain AT4 and more premium Terrain Denali will launch next year as 2026 models.

By the way, said Elevation replaces the entry-level SLE and SLT. All Terrain models will come with standard AWD at first. A FWD model will be added later in the 2025 model year.

Similar to the Equinox, the only engine available here is the same turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder unit that is found in the outgoing generation, producing a modest 175 horsepower and either 184 or 203 lb-ft of torque depending on the drivetrain. Too bad. It also means that maximum towing capacity stays put at 1,500 lbs, or just 800 lbs without AWD.

It’s not like fuel economy is great, either. The Terrain typically achieves a combined 9-9.3 L/100 km, and the 2025 model should mirror those ratings. AWD goes along with an eight-speed automatic transmission now instead of a nine-speed mixer, while FWD is paired with a new continuously variable transmission. Let’s wait and see if GM adds a plug-in hybrid variant in 2027 or later as previously hinted.

Tougher Exterior

In terms of styling, the 2025 GMC Terrain looks more rugged than its predecessor in part thanks to a new front grille inspired by the company’s trucks. The wheels are still 17 inches in size, but for the first time, the compact SUV offers a two-tone option with a black or grey roof.

The upcoming 2026 Terrain AT4 will stand out with increased ride height, a metal underbody shield, all-terrain tires, animated headlights and taillights, red front recovery hooks and a unique Terrain Mode.

As for the luxurious 2026 Terrain Denali at the top of the lineup, look for 19- or 20-inch wheels, unique Smart Frequency Dampers for improved ride comfort, as well as heated outboard rear seats.

Whole New World Inside

The updated cabin of the 2025 GMC Terrain emphasizes long, sweeping lines to accentuate the width of the vehicle, while chrome decoration throughout adds class. Available wireless chargers are conveniently located near the centre armrest.

The new 15-inch touchscreen in all models can show up to three applications simultaneously and comes with Google Built-in, meaning drivers can interact with the Google Assistant and use Google Maps without switching to Android Auto. Up to eight camera views are available including an optional rear camera mirror—a first for the Terrain. Also part of the mix are a 5G hotspot and 11-inch digital instrument panel.

What else? Standard content includes a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, rain-sensing wipers, a power liftgate and more than 15 advanced safety and driver assistance features. Among them are Enhanced Automatic Emergency Braking, Bicyclist Braking, Intersection Automatic Emergency Braking, Rear Cross Traffic Braking, Reverse Automatic Braking and Blind Zone Steering Assist.

Pricing for the 2025 GMC Terrain will be announced closer to launch later this year.
