Some Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Owners Told Not to Charge Due to Fire Risk

The Chrysler Pacifica is now under fire—like, literally—following the discovery of a battery problem on select 2017-2021 Pacifica Hybrid models. Over 24,000 units will be recalled globally including around 19,500 in the U.S. and 2,900 in Canada.

A company review of warranty data highlighted seven fires in this vehicle population. All occurred when the engine was turned off. Some occurred while charging. Four customers reported symptoms consistent with smoke inhalation, but other than that, there have been no serious injuries so far.

These incidents have all been linked to a rare abnormality in individual cells of the hybrid minivan’s high-voltage battery pack. Stellantis is continuing its investigation to confirm the problem.

The affected vehicles can still be driven safely, the automaker assures. However, out of an abundance of caution, owners are advised to park away from structures or other vehicles and refrain from charging until the remedy is obtained.

Said remedy is undergoing validation by Stellantis engineers. It involves a software update designed to detect the abnormality. If found, dealers will replace the high-voltage battery free of charge.
