2025 Mazda CX-5 is Nine Years Old, Next Gen Still Not Ready

Mazda keeps saying that a new, third-generation CX-5 is on the way, complete with an optional hybrid powertrain, but if you thought we’d see it for the 2025 model year, guess again. The wait is not over yet.

The current CX-5 dates back to 2017, meaning it’s about to turn nine years old. Of course, a series of changes, enhancements and special editions have kept it fresh during that time. Is the 2025 model getting some updates, too? Well, yes and no.

You see, the only modification to the lineup involves the middle-of-the-pack GT grade. Cruising & Traffic Support technology, which used to be reserved for higher-end models, is now available. It’s Mazda's most advanced form of active driving assistance, providing highway speed lane centering and adaptive cruise control, but it does not enable hands-free driving.

The same two 2.5-litre engines return for 2025. The base, naturally aspirated mill generates 187 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque, while the turbocharged variant delivers up to 256 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque when fed with 93-octane premium gasoline (227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft when using regular gas). All models feature i-Activ all-wheel drive as standard.

Pricing for the 2025 Mazda CX-5 ranges from $32,550 (GX) to $45,200 (Signature), not including $2,095 freight and PDI, which represents a hike of $250-$400 from the outgoing 2024 CX-5.

By the way, if you want a similarly sized Mazda SUV that does offer a hybrid powertrain, the CX-50 is adding one for 2025, as we previously reported.
