Seven Chevrolet Sparks Still Sold as New in Canada This Spring
It’s not unusual for new cars to remain on dealer lots several months after their production came to an end. But nearly two full years? Now that doesn’t happen very often.
As you may remember, General Motors stopped building the tiny Chevrolet Spark in August 2022 after previously discontinuing two other small cars, namely the Sonic and Cruze. We thought it was gone for good after a single sale was recorded in Canada during the fourth quarter of 2023 and none during the first quarter of 2024. Well, we were wrong.

Looking at the latest quarterly results, we’ve found that seven Sparks—that’s right, seven—were still sold as new across the country from April through June 2024. Where exactly did they come from? That’s a good question.
We’re also curious about the price each of these seven units sold for. The 2022 Chevy Spark carried a base MSRP of $10,398 with the five-speed manual gearbox (which was extremely hard to come by) and $14,698 with the optional CVT, making it Canada’s cheapest new vehicle at the time and a nice alternative to a used car.
These days, pre-owned Sparks from the same model year, with mileage that typically ranges from 10,000-30,000 km, are listed at around $20,000. Why? Because inflation and high interest rates have made new vehicles much less accessible, that’s why. Consequently, demand for many small cars that were killed just before the pandemic or shortly after remains fairly strong.
The South Korean-built Spark was an underwhelming performer with a naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine that produced a very modest 98 horsepower.
Chevrolet also sold an electric variant from 2013-2016, called Spark EV, which is now proving to be a nightmare for owners especially when it comes to service. GM started to buy back units earlier this year.
Believe it or not, there’s a chance the Spark might return at some point within the next few years. U.S. media outlet CarBuzz reported a short while ago that the automaker has filed to trademark the name “Spark EUV,” possibly for a future electric car. Fact or fiction? And will it be sold here?
