Toyota GR86 Hakone Returns for 2025, And You Need to Act Fast

Toyota continues to find ways to please fans of its entry-level sports coupe. Following the 2023 GR86 Special Edition that was limited to 20 units in Canada and the 2024 GR86 TRUENO Edition that sent 50 units our way, here comes the 2025 GR86 Hakone. A total of 860 copies will be allocated for the North American market, but only 30 of those will be sold in Canada.

The name is a familiar one since Toyota offered a similar model back in 2020, the final year of the first-generation 86. It pays tribute to one of the most exciting highways on the planet, namely the Hakone Turnpike about two hours southeast of Tokyo, in Japan.

Once again finished in Ridge Green, the car is based on the GR86 Premium and exclusively available with the six-speed manual gearbox. There are no changes to the naturally aspirated 2.4-litre flat-four engine, which generates 228 horsepower along with 184 lb-ft of torque and loves to rev.

The exterior features a colour-keyed duck-tail spoiler, various black accents and a Hakone badge in the rear, but the highlight is arguably the 18-inch wheels in a satin bronze finish.

Inside, you’ll find Ultrasuede sport seats with tan leather trim and stitching. A Hakone special edition shift knob with bronze accents sits front and centre, while a GR special edition plaque adds to the unique look and feel.

Similar to the outgoing TRUENO Edition, this new model benefits from Brembo brakes and a Sachs suspension giving it more bite and sharper handling especially during track driving. The former use red-painted callipers with four pistons in the front and two pistons in the rear.

Meanwhile, the upgraded dampers are filled with high-pressure nitrogen and oil to better absorb vibrations across a wide range of speeds, maximize ground contact and ensure firm, stable steering.

Those who opt for any other GR86 model can still rejoice in the fact that the dampers and power-assisted steering have been recalibrated for 2025 to help improve handling response and a sense of ground contact. What’s more, throttle mapping has been revised to increase the ease of “blipping,” or heel-toe downshifts if you prefer.

The 2025 Toyota GR86, including the GR86 Hakone, is expected to arrive at Toyota dealerships this fall. Pricing details will be shared closer to launch.
