Ram’s Three-Row Pickup Idea is Inching Closer to Reality

The Ram 1500 Revolution concept introduced at CES in Las Vegas back in January of last year foreshadowed the fully electric 2025 Ram 1500 REV that will enter production this fall while hinting at some innovations that could wind up in future pickups.

Among them were jump seats built into the midgate separating the cabin from the cargo bed, effectively creating a three-row seating arrangement. As you know, we’ve never seen that in anything other than SUVs and minivans. These seats could even be removed from the vehicle if required.

Well, it looks like Ram wants to move forward with the idea. Parent company Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, owned by Stellantis, has filed a patent application with the U.S. Patents and Trademarks Office (USPTO). The filing actually dates back to December 14, 2023, but was published on July 4, 2024.

As the images show, the three-row seating configuration is designed with extra space between the bench seat and the rear wall of the cabin. Integrated to the wall are dual jump seats that can be configured into a deployable position when needed or raised back up when not in use.

It’s safe to assume these seats are designed for children, not even small adults, due to the very limited amount of space in the third row. Incidentally, the patent filing makes no mention of cabin dimensions. But for some customers and large families in particular, this could be exactly what they need instead of buying an SUV or minivan.

Ram already offers class-leading interior room with the available Mega Cab, but having three rows of seats versus only two opens up many new possibilities, even more so if said seats can be taken out of the truck. A three-row Ram 1500 is not for tomorrow, mind you. The model has been significantly updated for 2025 and the next generation will take a few years to arrive.
