All-New 2025 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid Arrives, Offers Huge Gas Savings

As promised, Mazda is electrifying the CX-50 for the 2025 model year with a new hybrid powertrain.

Fuel economy is not this sleek-looking compact SUV’s forte, whether with the naturally aspirated 2.5-litre engine (187 hp, 185 lb-ft, 8.9 L/100 km) or with the turbocharged variant (up to 256 hp, 320 lb-ft, 9.4 L/100 km). However, the new CX-50 Hybrid is much more efficient.

Achieving an NRC-rated 6.2 L/100 km in combined city and highway driving, the model delivers fuel savings of at least 30 percent. It uses a system derived from the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, which is equally powerful at 219 hp though a tad more frugal at 6 L/100 km combined. The 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine and electric motors are controlled by an electronic CVT—a first for Mazda—and standard AWD. Torque is listed at 163 lb-ft.

Engineers have calibrated throttle response differently from Toyota to ensure the CX-50 Hybrid is fun to drive and lives up to Mazda’s reputation. Furthermore, new Power and Trail drive modes allow drivers to tailor their experience behind the wheel to match the situation at hand. On the flip side, maximum towing capacity drops from 2,000 lbs to 1,500 lbs, but that was to be expected.

In terms of looks, the CX-50 Hybrid stands out with unique wheel designs, a different lower front bumper and the availability of a new Garnet Red leather interior.

According to Mazda’s electrification plan announced in late 2022, four other hybrids will follow in 2025 along with a new battery-electric SUV that promises to be way more interesting than the MX-30 with regard to performance, range and interior space.

What Else is New for 2025?

All CX-50 models now benefit from the inclusion of Alexa Built-in, allowing drivers to make hands-free voice commands for prompts like changing the temperature, selecting a radio station or controlling smart home devices. The same thing can be found in the freshly announced 2025 Mazda3 and it’s safe to expect other Mazda vehicles to join them.

Meanwhile, safety is enhanced with new vehicle exit warning and an improved version of Smart Brake Support that includes provisions for nighttime pedestrian detection and head-on collision mitigation. There’s also a Private eCall function that initiates a call to connect vehicle occupants to an emergency call centre when first responders are required. Oh, and Stolen Vehicle Assistance is available via the MyMazda app to help authorities track and retrieve a stolen CX-50.
