No Ford or GM Among Top 20 Most American-Made Vehicles of 2024

Every year for nearly two decades now, with the U.S. Independence Day approaching, Cars.com releases its American-Made Index, highlighting and ranking the top 100 vehicles manufactured in the country.

The study is based on five main criteria including final assembly location, percentage of U.S. and Canadian parts, engine origin, transmission origin and U.S. manufacturing workforce. Various eligibility rules come into play.

Tesla, which occupied the top four spots in 2023, is still the champ this year with the Model Y in first place. The Honda Passport ranks second and the Volkswagen ID.4 is third. With the Tesla Model S right behind, three of the four most American-made vehicles of 2024 are electric. Remember, we’re talking about the land of Uncle Sam and Donald Trump.

Here’s a look at the top 20:

Have you noticed the massive presence of Japanese brands including Honda, Acura, Toyota et Lexus? Other than Tesla, the only vehicles from American brands in the top 20 are the Jeep Gladiator (8th) and Ram 1500 Classic (19th). Production of the latter has stopped for the Canadian market but continues for the U.S. and Mexico.

You have to go down to the 23rd and 24th places to see the first General Motors representatives, namely the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon. Meanwhile, the highest-ranked Ford is the Mustang (31st), two spots below the Lincoln Corsair (and one spot behind the Jeep Wrangler). What about America’s best-selling vehicle, the F-150? You’ll find it way down in 58th place.

A recent Cars.com survey found that 56 percent of in-market shoppers want to buy American-made vehicles, and more than half of them are willing to pay 10 percent or more over their planned budget if it means keeping jobs in the U.S.
