The Best Compact Sports Cars in 2024

Want to feel like a kid again? Get yourself a sports car, whatever the type or the price. Here, we’ll focus on compact sports cars, meaning those models that combine practicality with performance. They can be both daily drivers and weekend track warriors.

If you’re wondering which ones represent the best buys for 2024, we have the top 3 just below.

1. Volkswagen Golf GTI / Golf R

The German twins are our No.1 pick again this year, despite their more understated looks. Really, all they need is a more user-friendly interface and more ergonomic controls. The Golf GTI and Golf R offer that rare blend of agility, control and performance, each one in their own way. On top of that, they boast a comfortable, spacious and nicely finished cabin with generous storage.

The FWD-only Golf GTI features a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine generating 241 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque, while the Golf R makes the most of its sophisticated AWD system to put 315 horsepower and up to 295 lb-ft of torque to the ground (0-100 km/h in 4.3 seconds based on our own tests). The various drive modes add convenience and excitement to the equation.

If you love the manual transmission, you’d better hurry. As previously reported, the refreshed 2025 models will be automatic only. On the plus side, this means the 2024 versions are bound to retain great value in the future.

2. Subaru WRX

The rally-bred sports sedan was completely redesigned two years ago and now adds two new models for 2024 including a track-focused RS. With vigorous acceleration, excellent handling and some hardcore ways that true sporty driving enthusiasts are sure to appreciate, the WRX is one of the best four-door sports cars on the market.

We like the generous visibility and how easy it is to find a good driving position. Meanwhile, Subaru’s acclaimed AWD system is both a blessing when road conditions get worse and a wonderful ally when attacking tight corners on a track.

Producing 271 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, the WRX is more exhilarating to drive than in the past thanks to a more rigid chassis and sharper, more responsive steering. It’s hard to find a better car to have fun all year long, especially at such a low price.

3. Honda Civic Type R

An exceptional hatchback with more tasteful styling than its predecessor, the latest Civic Type R houses a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that cranks out 315 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Mated to a slick-shifting six-speed manual gearbox, it accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 5.4 seconds. Unlike the Golf R and WRX, the Civic Type R makes do with FWD, which obviously affects sprint times.

But you know what? Steering is impeccable and the dual-axis strut suspension up front beautifully eliminates torque steer. The ride and the seats might be firm, but the latter offer the best support you can find.

Alas, the Civic Type R is pretty expensive and extremely limited in Canada. If you’re lucky enough to get your hands on one, it’ll be a sound investment, for sure.

Want More Options?

If you prefer classic, two-door sports cars, the Toyota GR 86 and Subaru BRZ will give you the most bang for your buck in our opinion. As for premium sports cars, the Chevrolet Corvette is still the one to beat for value, ahead of the Porsche 911 and 718.

Don’t forget that we have recommendations for other vehicle segments, too. Just go to our Best Buys section now.
