The Best Midsize Luxury SUVs in 2024

After looking at the best compact luxury SUVs on the market in a previous article, we’ll now turn our attention to larger and brawnier models from the midsize segment. Considering the wide selection available in Canada, which ones represent the best buys for 2024?

While our team of experts at The Car Guide kept the Porsche Cayenne in third place, we settled on a new contender as our top pick, meaning last year’s winner now finds itself in second place. Check out the podium:

1. Lexus RX

Completely redesigned a year ago, Lexus’ popular two-row midsize luxury SUV is improved in every way—and easier on the eye, too, thanks to the work designers have done on the front grille.

The biggest change to the RX lineup for 2024 is the addition of a plug-in hybrid variant that combines a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with a pair of electric motors for a total of 304 horsepower. Zero-emission range stretches to 60 km. It’s a compelling alternative to PHEV variants of the BMX X5, Porsche Cayenne, Mercedes-Benz GLE and Volvo XC90. Likely more reliable, as well.

Otherwise, customers can choose from a trio of four-cylinder powertrains including two hybrids. While not particularly dynamic, the RX proves remarkably quiet and comfortable. We also enjoy the clear and user-friendly infotainment system. On the other hand, cargo capacity is below average.

2. Acura MDX

Redesigned two years ago, Acura’s midsize luxury SUV boasts a revised lineup for 2024. A 3.5-litre V6 producing 290 horsepower drives most models, while the MDX Type S Ultra packs a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 rated at 355 horsepower. 

The MDX doesn’t scream for attention, yet it remains a favourite of Canadian families looking for a comfortable and generously equipped SUV at a much lower price than German competitors. On top of that, build quality is outstanding.

Some might complain about tight access to the third-row seats, but the biggest problem with the MDX is arguably the infotainment system and its frustrating touchpad on the centre console. Not a deal-breaker, but it definitely takes some getting used to.

3. Porsche Cayenne

For 2024, the Cayenne debuts a third generation, but you may not see any difference from the outside. That being said, we applaud Porsche for cleaning up the console and incorporating a super-sharp digital instrument cluster that quickly becomes intuitive.

Throughout our various test drives, we found that the new Cayenne offers an exceptional mix of comfort, luxury and performance. Material selection is fantastic, just like the SUV’s solid construction.

There are seven models to choose from including three hybrids, one of which provides 50 km of EV range. With a twin-turbocharged V8 producing 468 horsepower and a price tag just shy of $110,000, the Cayenne S makes the most sense, in our opinion. Acceleration is impressive and you’ll never get tired of driving. Whichever model you choose, watch out for expensive options and packages!
