Next-Gen Chevrolet Bolt EV to Arrive in 2025

General Motors CEO Mary Barra yesterday told journalists in Detroit when the Chevrolet Bolt EV will return, as announced back in July.

Unfortunately for shoppers interested in a small and cheap electric vehicle, we won’t see it at any point next year. Rather, the next generation is slated to arrive in 2025. Barra stopped short of saying whether it would be a 2025 or 2026 model.

In fact, she didn’t reveal much more than that, but rejoiced at the fact that sales have been “great” this year. In Canada alone, 10,957 units were sold during the first three quarters of 2023, an increase of 151 percent from the same period in 2022 (when the massive battery recall and ensuing replacements seriously impacted sales).

In case you didn’t know already, production of the current Bolt EV (and Bolt EUV) will cease in the next few days as the Orion assembly plant near Detroit gets retooled to build electric pickups sometime in late 2025.

What do we know about the future Bolt EV? Well, the biggest change will be the switch to GM’s Ultium platform. Barra has also confirmed that the car will use a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery and be manufactured at a lower cost.

That means drivers can expect longer range than the 417 km achieved by the existing model, as well as faster charging speeds. Will AWD finally be available as an option? It’s not impossible, but the company’s main focus is to offer an affordable product.

Considering that the delayed 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV will likely cost more than initially advertised, that’s got to be good news for a number of potential customers.
