Ford Mustang Cobra Jet Cranked Up to 1,800 Electric Horsepower

Ford continues to amaze by taking the legendary Mustang to new heights. This time we’re talking about the Cobra Jet model designed for drag racing.

Remember the fully electric Cobra Jet 1400 that was introduced in 2020? The same car that completed the quarter-mile in an unprecedented 8.128 seconds at a track in Ohio a year later? The team at Ford Performance today unveiled an aggressive evolution.

Now called Super Cobra Jet 1800, the special Mustang aims to set a new acceleration record for full-bodied electric vehicles. UPDATE 03/25/2024: The record has been set at 7.759 seconds.

“We’re always looking to push ourselves in every corner of the motorsport world,” said Mark Rushbrook, global director at Ford Performance Motorsports. “Drag racing remains a key proving ground for our products and technology, and we’re excited to not only try to best our own record in the quarter-mile, but to further showcase ongoing development we continue to make across the entire electric vehicle landscape.”

While the Cobra Jet 1400 didn’t quite pack 1,400 horsepower, Ford assures that the Super Cobra Jet 1800 lives up to its name and generates 1,800 horsepower. It utilizes the same four PN-250-DZR inverters coupled to two double-stacked DS-250-115 motor pairings as before, but now attached to a new transmission and powered by an entirely redone, lighter battery system designed by Ford Performance and MLe Racecars.

Power is sent to an MLe Racecars-revised rear end featuring improved suspension geometry and larger Mickey Thompson drag radials to optimize launches.

“Our changes have made significant improvements to the car, including removing hundreds of pounds in weight,” Rushbrook explained.

In addition to going for a new full-bodied electric vehicle record, the Super Cobra Jet 1800 will also attempt to claim records for fastest electric vehicle from 0-60 mph and fastest two-wheel drive electric vehicle from 0-60 mph during an event sanctioned by the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) later in 2023.
