Incredibly Rare and Awesome Pontiac GTO Judge Sold for $1.5 Million

The Pontiac GTO is a proud member of the glorious Muscle Car era, and collectors are always looking for the rarest and most incredible examples.

Last weekend in Florida, Mecum Kissimmee a.k.a. “The World’s Largest Collector Car Auction” shattered a record with the sale of a 1970 GTO Judge Ram Air IV Convertible for $1.1 million USD. This amounts to nearly $1.5 million CAD at the current exchange rate.

Here’s what you need to know: Pontiac produced a total of 40,149 GTOs in 1970, of which 3,797 were Judges and 168 were Judge convertibles, and of those Judge convertibles, 17 were Ram Air IV-powered and only seven had the automatic transmission. The engine, by the way, was tuned to deliver 370 horsepower and a massive 500 pound-feet of torque.

This particular 1970 GTO Judge Ram Air IV Convertible started out as a factory exhibition car used for show duty. Painted in Orbit Orange, which was only available for that one year, it has been treated to an extensive body-off-frame restoration and has received a treasure trove of awards over the years.

In addition to the aforementioned powertrain, the Judge convertible was also factory-equipped with power steering and power front disc brakes, a Formula steering wheel, an AM/FM radio, stereo 8-track tape player, custom seat belts, a Soft Ray tinted windshield, a hood tachometer and Rally II wheels mounting Firestone Wide Oval white-letter tires.
