2023 Honda Civic Type R Getting 326 Hp, Leaked Document Says
Completely revised and improved, with the latest Civic Hatchback as a foundation, the new 2023 Type R made its official debut in July during a special event in Los Angeles. However, there is still plenty we don’t know about the car.
Yesterday, an official brochure in Japan somehow leaked online and was caught by a member of the CivicXI forum. It contains many different specs including power and torque.

Honda likes to brag that the new Civic Type R is the most powerful model in Type R’s 30-year history thanks to key revisions to the turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine. This is backed up by the aforementioned brochure: 326 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. If these numbers hold up in North America, we’ll be looking at an increase of 20 horsepower and 15 pound-feet over the outgoing model.
Keep in mind that the latest Volkswagen Golf R is slightly less potent with 315 horsepower and up to 295 pound-feet of torque.
According to the document, the 2023 Civic Type R weighs 1,430 kilograms, making it 40 kilograms heavier than its predecessor. Again, we’re talking about the JDM-spec model, but there shouldn’t be a big difference with ours (which used to tip the scales at 1,417 kilograms). How much will the extra weight affect acceleration? We don’t have the definitive answer yet.
Interestingly, the final transmission ratio is increased from 3.842 to 4.111, which should theoretically enable a higher top speed. Remember, the new Type R broke the front-wheel drive production-car track record at the Suzuka Circuit in Japan.
Drivers will also benefit from a more rigid body that helps improve high-speed stability and cornering performance, as well as enhanced steering and suspension tuning.
Honda Canada promised to share full details and pricing for the 2023 Civic Type R closer to launch this fall. We might even get them as early as this week or the next, so watch this space.
