2015-2022 GMC Canyon: What Should You Know Before Buying?
GMC recently unveiled the next-generation 2023 Canyon, which reaches unprecedented levels of capability and performance with its AT4X trim. The model is still follows the Chevrolet Colorado closely, and is sure to put up a good fight against the Ford Ranger, also redesigned for 2023.
If you are not sure about a brand-new Canyon, or if your budget is better suited for a used model, here’s what you need to know about the 2015-2022 GMC Canyon …
First, several configurations are possible with this mid-size pickup: extended or crew cab, rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, and 5’2’’ or 6’2’’ bed. More comfortable and luxurious than the previous generation, the all-new Canyon also features a good number of the latest connectivity and safety technologies.
Under the hood, you can find a 2.5-litre four-cylinder producing approximately 200 horsepower, or a 3.6-litre V6 with a little more than 300 horsepower. Other Canyons come with a 2.8-litre Duramax turbo diesel four-cylinder that’s interesting because of its low consumption and its impressive 369 foot-pounds of torque. Also note that the Canyon’s four-wheel drive system is a little more sophisticated than the Colorado’s.
A six-speed manual or automatic gearbox is generally included. For 2020, the first was abandoned, but an eight-speed automatic was added to the menu, allowing more fluid accelerations and a lower consumption, which was one of this truck’s flaws.
Depending on the version, the Canyon’s maximum towing capacity ranges from 7,000 to 7,700 pounds with the proper equipment, which places it in a favourable position among the competition.
For model year 2017, the Canyon’s line-up was extended with the addition of a high-end Denali version (the one you need for maximum luxury and comfort) and an All Terrain X trim, with its improved off-road equipment. The second was renamed AT4 in 2020. Although it’s not as spectacular as the Colorado ZR2, it still allows you to drive off-road, but don’t skimp on maintenance!
The 2020 model gained a few more features and, a year later, GMC gave the Canyon a new modernised front end.
And what about the downsides? Well, there’s the interior finish that’s lacking refinement, the fairly thirsty gas engines, and the Duramax diesel engine isin't very smooth. However, the suspension is well-calibrated, which makes for a comfortable ride.
Finally, be aware that a dozen recalls have been issued for the 2015-2022 Canyon, especially the two first model years. The most important one is about the front brake callipers, which can leak brake fluid. Overall, it’s a relatively reliable truck, but you should probably go for a more recent example, ideally that’s still on the manufacturer’s warranty.
