Pre-Owned Honda Civic: How Much Should You Pay?
The new 2022 Honda Civic brings the popular Japanese compact back to the top of its class, according to many automotive journalists. However, its higher base price (MSRP from 24 465 $) makes it less attractive and accessible for some. Others simply want to get their hands on a Civic for as cheap as possible.
So, how much should you pay for a used Honda Civic? Let’s see …
Before going any further, you should know that since most dealers’ inventories have gone down because of recent events, the value of used cars has gone up accordingly. By doing a search on Otogo.ca, we can find more than 700 used Honda Civics for sale with model years from 2004 to 2021, including 2022 demos offered at a discount. Generally, they go from $3,000 (sedan with over 200,000 km on the meter) up to about $50,000 (high performance Civic Type R).
Now, if we look at the three last generations of Civic, we can see that those between 2006 and 2011 sell for about $6,000 for a well-preserved specimen with reasonable mileage. A 2008 Civic is listed under $3,000 but it’s been driven over 285 000 km and shows obvious signs of distress.
The following generation has known a shorter career (2012 to 2015), but remains a valuable option. Prices range mostly between $8,000 and $18,000, and the most expensive ones often are Si Civics with 205 HP engines. For $10,000 $ or less, we are typically talking about a DX or LX basic version.
Finally, the choice is much more diverse when it comes to the last generation of Civic, produced from 2016 to 2021. Not only did Honda bring back the hatchback, they also gave us the aforementioned Type R, a Civic with more than 300 HP under the hood. Believe it or not, some examples with less than 10,000 km can still be found and they are now worth even more than the new ones. A 2021 Type R in particular, with 3,800 km on the meter, is currently listed at no less than $59,995!
And since you can find 2017-2020 Civics with under 40,000 km for the same price as a brand new 2022 Civic base model, that’s really something to think about.
Happy shopping!
