How to Find the Cheapest Gas

The stratospheric rise in gas prices since the beginning of the year has forced many drivers to ask themselves if they should keep their vehicle or switch to a less energy-consuming model. Some will, of course, consider a fully electric model. But if you're not ready to take the dive into the EV world just yet, you'll most likely want to do everything you can to save money at the pump.

Beyond keeping your vehicle in top mechanical shape, you can also pay attention to where you fill up. Because let’s face it; the price of gasoline is never the same everywhere, whether it's from one region to another or from one retailer to another.

So, how does find the cheapest gas? Here are some good places to start…

Essence Québec

If you work on the road, travel often or just like to save on gas? Essence Québec is for you. On this platform, registered users can check the price of gasoline in real time from hundreds of stations across the province. There is a ranking of the best prices by region for the last 72 hours (also available in map view), the most recent price updates as well as a forum to share comments, information, details and tips.

CAA Gas Prices

The CAA Gas Price Resources tool allows you to find out local, provincial and national gas prices, as well as weekly, monthly and yearly trends and averages. Only in Quebec, there is pricing info for thirty cities and it is updated very regularly. It may be more informative than practical, but nothing beats comparing yourself with other regions. CAA Quebec Gas Resources’ data is calculated by CAA-Quebec.

GasBuddy

Finally, there are plenty of specialized smartphone apps that show local gas prices so you can easily find the best station to fill up no matter where you are, not only in Canada but also in the United States. The most popular one is probably GasBuddy. You can use it to save on gas on your everyday commutes or when on vacation. The large community of users is responsible for keeping current prices up to date. Additionally, there is a calculator to determine the fuel costs for a given route.
