Juan Manuel Fangio’s 1958 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster Headed to Auction
Car enthusiasts and collectors know how valuable the celebrated Mercedes-Benz 300SL is. A 1955 Gullwing model was recently sold for $6.82 million USD, just so you know.
Now, imagine an example that once belonged to, and was driven by a racing legend, more specifically five-time Formula One champion Juan Manuel Fangio. That’s exactly what RM Sotheby’s will be auctioning from February 28 to March 4.

The 1958 300SL Roadster was a gift from Mercedes-Benz following Fangio’s retirement. El Maestro is responsible for most of the 72,951 km that appear on the odometer. He first drove the car across Europe and later had it shipped to his native Argentina. It stayed with him until his death and was ultimately included in his museum in Balcarce.
The car has never been restored and remains just as Fangio left it. The seats, steering wheel and shifter are the same that he himself used.
Even though many components show obvious signs of wear and tear, Fangio’s 1958 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster is going to sell for crazy money. Unfortunately, we won’t know how much the buyer actually paid for it because RM Sotheby’s has arranged a sealed bid auction.
