Prince Philip's Custom-Built Land Rover Unveiled
Photos of a Land Rover designed by the Duke of Edinburgh made to transport his coffin have been released.
Prince Philip was behind the development of this vehicle, which includes a series of custom modifications. For example, the rear was modified into a flat bed. The vehicle has been painted in a military green colour with matching green wheels and has no licence plates.
The modified Land Rover Defender TD5 130 has a single bench seat in the front, and is fitted with metal pins in the rear that will secure the Prince's coffin.
The initial idea was to use this chopped-up Defender to transport the Duke’s coffin from Wellington Arch to Windsor, a distance of approximately 35 kilometres. Unfortunately, the ongoing pandemic has affected those plans.
While the last official modifications to the vehicle were done in 2019, the project started in 2003, just about 18 years ago. The Land Rover was built at the manufacturer’s factory in Solihull, England.
The Duke of Edinburgh, along with the royal family has been regularly seen in and around Land Rover products for the last 40 years.
Prince Philip, husband of Queen Elizabeth II for over 70 years died on April 9, 2021, at the age of 99. His funeral is planned for April 17, 2021, at the St. George Chapel.
