GM Keeps Promise, Produces 10 Millionth Mask
After being mandated by the Canadian government to produce 10 million face masks in May 2020, General Motors has announced that it has held its promise.
The 10 millionth mask produced in the automaker's Oshawa factory will be donated to Ottawa’s Ingenium Museum.
“This is one of the proudest moments in our history to be able to step up and support all Canadians during this challenging time,” said Scott Bell, GM Canada president and managing director.
GM has also announced that 500 000 extra masks will be produced and distributed to dealerships, which in turn will be able to donate them to charities of their choice.
Last year, GM’s Oshawa factory was able to obtain certification, train its staff, and install proper machinery to produce the masks in a little more than three weeks. This is just one of many days in which large companies did their part to support Canada through the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Unifor members in Oshawa are highly skilled and proud to help GM make whatever our country needs to get through this pandemic,” said Jerry Dias, Unifor National President.
The masks were sold without profit to the Public Health Agency of Canada.
