Is Another VW Golf R With More Power Really Coming?

Unveiled last November, the eighth-gen Volkswagen Golf R will go on sale in Canada near the end of this year as a 2022 model. Just like us, hot hatch enthusiasts can’t wait to get a taste of its new 315-horsepower engine, which is significantly more potent than the previous one.

What if that wasn’t the end of it, though? It appears the company has an even more muscular variant in store. The question is: will we get it here?

As you know, the new Volkswagen Golf is already available on the other side of the Atlantic. Through the YouTube channel of volkswizard, we can see a July 2020 copy of the owner’s manual in the U.K. and it lists all the different engines included in the lineup.

A 315-hp (235-kW) version of the turbocharged four-cylinder is in there, but it’s not the most powerful. Just below, you’ll find a 329-hp (245-kW) engine with the same 310 lb-ft. of torque. What could this be?

Some have already speculated that Volkswagen will launch a Golf R Plus, essentially a performance package for the regular Golf R—similar to what BMW does with M and M Competition models.

With 315 horsepower and 0-100 km/h acceleration in just 4.7 seconds, the car is quicker than the current Honda Civic Type R and Subaru WRX STI. Can you imagine with over a dozen more ponies under the hood? And the same Drift mode?

But let’s not get too carried away so soon. After all, the 296-hp (221-kW) engine that’s also listed in the owner’s manual belongs to the new Golf GTI Clubsport, which we won’t get in North America. Same thing for a couple of other engine variants with less power.

We’ll still keep our fingers crossed just in case…
