The Car Guide's Best Buys for 2021: Subaru Crosstrek
Every year, The Car Guide unveils a list of Best Buys covering all the different vehicle categories in the industry.
Sub-compact SUVs have been the fastest-growing segment in the auto industry over the past few years. While smaller than traditional compact SUVs, these vehicles prove capable thanks to standard or available all-wheel drive.

For 2021, we ranked the Subaru Crosstrek as the No. 1 contender. Based on the same platform as the Subaru Impreza, but with more ground clearance, the Crosstrek now benefits from a second engine option. In addition to the base 2.0-litre four-cylinder, customers can choose a more powerful 2.5-litre unit that makes the drive more pleasant.
With a smooth ride, great AWD system, superior fit and finish, plus a versatile interior, the Crosstrek is a desirable pick for Canadians.
The runner-up in the segment is the best-handling SUV of the bunch, namely the Mazda CX-30. Once again, the company delights drivers with superb on-road dynamics.
Because the ride is a bit stiffer than the Crosstrek’s and rear-seat room is more limited, we decided to rank the CX-30 second.
Third place is occupied by a newcomer, the Kia Seltos. Larger than most competitors, this Korean model offers a roomy and versatile interior, especially when it comes to cargo capacity. In fact, it’s the main reason why we elevated the Seltos above its cousin, the Hyundai Kona.
