Watch: This 730-hp Volkswagen Golf R is a Monster
The sensational Volkswagen Golf R did not return for 2020 and the next generation won’t hit the market before the 2022 model year.
What do we know about it? Well, styling will be based on the new Golf GTI unveiled a few months ago—with some extra flair and unique touches, of course—and the engine is expected to deliver a lot more than the 292 horsepower (and 280 pound-feet of torque) we are used to.

It won’t be the turbocharged 2.5-litre five-cylinder from Audi, unfortunately, because the luxury brand reportedly blocked its parent company from using this fearsome engine.
One Golf R owner in Germany still found a way to get his hands on an Audi RS 3 engine, rated at 394 horsepower, and dropped it in his car. He also replaced the turbocharger with a custom unit designed by a company called TheTurboEngineers and performed a couple more tweaks.
The result is a whopping 730 horsepower—more than double the output of the base Golf R.
In the video below, you can see the almighty hot hatch take on an RS 3 and even an RS 6 wagon at a drag strip. It’s entertaining to watch, but also a treat for the ears. Obviously, we won’t spoil you the ending.
One thing is for sure, the Golf R platform can handle a lot of power and this car also has remarkable tuning potential.
