Watch: Tesla Cybertruck as Seen by Elon Musk and Jay Leno
The Tesla Cybertruck is still a long way from reaching driveways, but it seems to have a knack for making headlines and fueling discussions among EV and pickup enthusiasts alike.
Its upcoming appearance on CNBC’s Jay Leno’s Garage certainly will keep the buzz going. In a short trailer posted this weekend, the famous talk-show host and car collector takes the futuristic truck for a spin with Tesla CEO Elon Musk riding shotgun.

Right off the bat, Leno points to the fact that the Cybertruck has a very similar feel to other Teslas with instant acceleration among other things. He also likes the expansive greenhouse that makes for a wide-open cabin.
More interesting, though, is what Musk had to say. Unlike many car companies that introduce spectacular show cars and fall flat with the production versions, Tesla always seeks to do the opposite, hinting that the real Cybertruck will be better than what we’ve seen so far.
When asked why it is so important for the Cybertruck to be bulletproof, Musk answers right back: “Because it’s badass and super cool! Do you want your truck to be bulletproof or not? Of course you do! […] We want to be a leader in apocalypse technology.
While he says in the video that the Cybertruck’s proportions will be reduced by 5 percent to fit in most garages, Musk later wrote on Twitter that upon further review with Tesla chief designer Franz von Holzhausen, “even 3% smaller is too small. Will be pretty much this size.”
At 5,885 mm long, 2,027 mm wide and 1,905 mm tall, the current Cybertruck prototype is roughly the equivalent of a Ford F-150 SuperCrew with a 6.5-foot bed.
In the same tweet, Musk added that Tesla will “probably do a smaller, tight world truck at some point,” meaning the Ford Ranger and Toyota Tacoma might get a new, all-electric rival.
More than 600,000 customers have made a reservation for the Cybertruck so far even though the first deliveries are not planned until late 2021. Heck, the factory isn’t even built yet. Tesla is expected to announce the location shortly and it looks like it will be in Austin, Texas.
