Mercedes Brings Back The Gullwing!

Mercedes Benz has had a pretty spotty history of producing supercars. The first one in recent memory; the homologation special CLK GTR, was limited by a tiny production run. Their second large supercar milestone, the Mercedes McLaren SLR, was a slow seller and the subject of much criticism as being far more grand tourer than sports car.

Of course, prior to all those, the famous 300 SL (or Gullwing, as it was better known) set the world on fire with stupendous performance and amazing looks. And now Mercedes is tapping into that gorgeous car’s tradition with the new SLS AMG. Interestingly, the SLS AMG doesn’t astound on the dyno, producing just 563 horsepower and 480 pound feet of torque. That’s nothing compared to the powerhouse powerplants typically underneath the AMG badge, but with a lightweight superstructure, the SLS AMG nudges 600 miles per hour in just 3.7 seconds en route to a top speed of 197 miles per hour.
