2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 4MATIC+ Coupe Completes One-Two Punch
The redesigned GLE midsize SUV lineup is adding a new member. Following the high-performance Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 4MATIC+ announced earlier this year, here comes the GLE 53 4MATIC+ Coupe.
Like other “53” models at AMG, this mild hybrid unit combines a turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine with an electric compressor and a 48-volt EQ Boost alternator-starter. Aside from the 429 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque generated by the combustion engine, you get an additional 21 horsepower and 184 pound-feet for a short period. Sprints from 0-100 km/h are completed in 5.3 seconds.
Mated to a nine-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT automatic transmission as well as AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive, the GLE 53 4MATIC+ Coupe has seven drive modes. Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual are complemented by two off-road-specific settings: Trail and Sand.
AMG DYNAMIC SELECT adapts important parameters such as the responsiveness of the engine and transmission, the characteristic curve of the accelerator and steering, the suspension damping and on rare occasions, the vehicle's sound.
Meanwhile, the AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL system promises enhanced agility and handling by adapting the AMG RIDE CONTROL+ air suspension according to driving conditions.
When the Sport and Sport+ modes are activated, the SUV lowers its suspension by 15 millimetres, and in Comfort mode, it does the same from 120 km/h upwards. This lowers the vehicle’s centre of gravity, improves aerodynamics and reduces fuel consumption. The suspension can also be raised by 55 millimetres for extra ground clearance when needed.
With the optional AMG TRACK PACE, the MBUX infotainment system is enhanced with a virtual engineer that can record vehicle-specific data and times on closed routes. Many of these values can be displayed on the widescreen cockpit or on the available head-up display in real-time.
Behind the AMG Performance steering wheel in black Nappa leather is an instrument cluster that contains specific details such as the AMG start-up menu and the four selectable styles: Classic, Sport, AMG exclusive Supersport and Discreet. When you activate either Trail or Sand drive mode, off-road specific settings such as slope, incline and level can be displayed there.
Other components getting the AMG treatment include the seats, door sills, front fascia, side skirts, rear spoiler and 21-inch wheels. And if you care about practicality, the automaker claims best-in-class cargo capacity of up to 1,790 litres when the 40/20/40 rear seats are folded (655 litres when they’re up).
Pricing for the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 4MATIC+ Coupe and its on-sale date in Canada will be announced later. This model will compete directly against sportier versions of the Audi Q8, BMW X6 and Porsche Cayenne Coupe.
