2019 GMC Sierra HD: We're Heading to Wyoming for a First Drive
The Car Guide is heading to the small town of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, for a first drive of the all-new 2019 GMC Sierra HD.
This year is a big one for American heavy-duty pickups as many of them get a complete redesign and some massive capabilities.
On one hand, there's the new RAM HD with up to 1,000 pound-feet of torque and a remarkable Power Wagon variant for off-road enthusiasts. On the other hand, Ford is about to blow our minds with the 2020 Super Duty coming this fall.
In between them is GM's duo consisting of the Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD, also fully redesigned and improved. We've already tested the former, and now we're going to see how the latter stands out.
Mechanically, these two pickups are identical. Their 6.6-litre turbo-diesel V8 engine produces 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque via a 10-speed automatic transmission, good for a best-in-class towing capacity of up to 35,500 pounds (16,102 kilograms).
A gasoline V8 joins the lineup, offering 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque which are managed by a six-speed autobox.
The Sierra HD also comes in Denali and AT4 trims, unlike the Chevrolet truck. The AT4 features Rancho shocks for off-road driving, skid plates and a locking rear differential, a combination that aims to take on the Ram Power Wagon and Ford Super Duty Tremor. The MultiPro tailgate and Carbon Pro bed (made of carbon fibre, naturally) are other highlights, here.
