It’s official: A BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is on the Way
Through a short press release and the above teaser image, BMW has just announced that it will expand its 2 Series lineup with the addition of a four-door Gran Coupe model.
Described as a global offering, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe will join the two-door coupe and cabriolet (not to mention the high-performance M2) as a particularly design-oriented variant aimed at a new type of modern, urban customers, the company said.
While no technical specs have been provided at this point, it’s safe to assume the 248-horsepower four-cylinder and 335-horsepower six-cylinder turbocharged engines will be available. And unlike the Gran Coupe versions of the 4 Series and 6 Series, which both come with an eight-speed automatic transmission exclusively, there’s a good chance we’ll see a six-speed manual gearbox as well. BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system will likely be optional.
Look for the new BMW 2 Series Grand Coupe to make its global debut in November at the Los Angeles Auto Show and go on sale in the spring of 2020.
Less is More
In other BMW news, the automaker has just warned shareholders that profits in 2019 will be well below last years’ due to higher raw materials prices, the costs of compliance with tougher emissions requirements and unfavourable shifts in currency exchange rates.
Cost-saving measures will be implemented, but there are no plans for layoffs.
It was already announced that the BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce brands will be grouped into a single sales division. And on Wednesday, the Associated Press reported that half of the automaker’s engine variants will be dropped in a move to reduce product complexity.
