Ford Reviving 5.0L Mustang?
In the Mustang world, there are a lot of famous badges. Ranging from Boss to Mach 1 to Shelby, most of the best known hail from the ‘60s, but one resounds within an entirely different generation: 5.0. Adorning the flanks of the 80’s and early 90’s, the badge signified the last utilizations of the old 302 small block V8.
But with Ford’s extensive engine update leading to the expected death of the venerable 4.6L modular motor, the automotive press has been abuzz with the news of the upcoming “Coyote” 32-valve V8. Displacing a full five litres, the brand new motor is expected to produce some serious power, but Ford has been tight-lipped about the motor’s applications. Most expected is it’s usage in the F-150 and other truck lines, but for obvious reasons, Mustang fans have been most curious to know if the new V8 will appear under their favourite hood.
And it would appear, through the digging of a particularly fanatical Mustang enthusiast, that it will. Spotted amongst the other doodads in the Mustang parts book is a 5.0L badge wearing a 2011 Mustang parts number. Also spotted in the parts guide were parts numbers for a 3.7L V6 with both automatic and manual transmissions, a 5.0L V8 engine option with the same transmission options, and the familiar 5.4L supercharged V8. Although some remain sceptical, it gives those Mustang fans that remember the 80’s something to look forward to.
