2018 Lexus LS: World Premiere Scheduled for the Detroit Auto Show
SEVILLE, Spain – During the media launch of the 2017 Lexus LC in Spain, we learned that the brand’s new GA-L platform, which stands for Global Architecture – Luxury, will not only underpin the LC 500 and LC 500h, but also the next-generation LS. The redesigned, full-size luxury sedan will make its world debut at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2017.
The GA-L platform will be stretched for duty underneath the LS sedan, which will be offered once again in two variants, with regular and extended wheelbases, the latter being the choice for CEOs who prefer to be chauffeured.
We expect the next LS to offer a hybrid powertrain, consisting of a V6 engine and electric motors, or a V8, as is the case with the LC 500 and LC 500h coupes. However, we shouldn’t rule out that the Lexus division might decide to introduce a hydrogen-powered LS, as the recently launched Toyota Mirai demonstrated the company’s know-how in the development of this technology.
From a styling standpoint, the LS luxury sedan should the bold look of the LC coupe, which would be a drastic change from the current model, whose design is already ten years old.
In addition, we learned that the GA-L platform was conceived to serve as a basis for other eventual Lexus models that will be equipped with rear-wheel and all-wheel drivetrains. Moreover, it’s possible that the LC coupes would be followed by a cabriolet version, probably with a soft top given the relatively small size of the coupes’ trunk.
Also, in order to better confront its German rivals, it is possible that turbocharging could eventually be added to the LC 500 coupe’s naturally aspirated V8, creating a performance-oriented model that would measure up to its direct competition. To be continued.
