VW T-Prime Concept GTE the hybrid SUV you're waiting for
Volkswagen is planning "a vehicle in the style of the T-Prime Concept GTE," a plug-in hybrid SUV concept that debuted at the 2016 Beijing auto show.
The T-Prime Concept GTE is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder and an electric motor that has been integrated into the housing of its eight-speed automatic transmission, according to Volkswagen.
The gas engine makes 248 horsepower and 273 lb.-ft. of torque, while the electric motor makes 134 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque.
Combined system output is 375 horsepower and 516 lb.-ft. of torque, while the 14.1-kWh lithium-ion battery pack provides as much as 31 miles, or 50 kilometres, of electric driving range.
Taking advantage of the gasoline/electric powertrain are three different drive modes, each designed to maximize power and efficiency.
Volkswagen said the T-Prime Concept GTE's hybrid powertrain is designed to use battery power first and starts in E-Mode.
A hybrid mode is also on board, while a GTE mode allows drivers to access full system power while also adjusting pedal, gearbox and steering characteristics for a sportier feel.
From the outside, the T-Prime Concept GTE has a sportier design than the current Touareg while retaining a familiar look and proportions.
At 199.6 inches, it is almost 11 inches longer than the Touareg, while measuring about as wide and tall.
Up front is a grille that almost seamlessly merges with the headlights to span the entire width of the T-Prime Concept GTE, while the side profile is pinched towards the rear to give the look of motion even when it is standing still.
A combination of aluminum, blue leather and glossy-black surfaces contrast with wood accents leather seating to create "a mobile living space," while the 12-inch instrumentation screen and 15-inch infotainment screen create "one visual and functional unit."
Other unique features of the T-Prime Concept GTE include a by-wire shifter that is made of a glass scroll wheel, and touch-sensitive areas of the steering wheel that replace buttons for audio and phone controls.
"With the new T-Prime Concept GTE, we are once again showcasing how Volkswagen can ideally master the whole range of differentiation possibilities, even within the individual SUV model series," chief designer Klaus Bischoff said in a statement.
"On the one hand, this concept shows the authentic Volkswagen SUV design of the modern era; but at the same time it takes entirely new approaches."
