2017 Fiat 124 Spider Elaborazione Abarth unveiled
We've been duped.
Just weeks after Fiat unveiled the Abarth 124 Spider at the Geneva auto show, it pulled the cover off another Abarth version of the Mazda MX-5-based roadster—one built specifically for the North American market.
First, the bad news: Unlike the Abarth 124 Spider, the 2017 Fiat 124 Elaborazione Abarth makes the same 160 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque as the standard 124 Spider.
While torque remains the same, that's 10 fewer ponies than its European counterpart makes from the same turbocharged 1.4-litre four-cylinder.
The good news is that virtually everything else from the European Abarth carries over to the Elaborazione Abarth, including the mechanical limited-slip differential, Bilstein shocks at all four corners, sport-tuned exhaust, and exclusive sport mode that changes engine, stability control, power steering and, if you're so inclined, automatic transmission calibrations "to ensure a sporty, responsive and performance-oriented driving experience."
The European version's Brembo brake kit is also available.
It also borrows that car's aggressive-looking front and rear bumpers, matte black hood, and 17-inch wheels, windshield surround and roll bars finished in gun metal outside, and red interior accents and optional Recaro seats inside.
