2016 Porsche 911 R: a GT3 RS for Purists
The 911 range is one of the most expansive in the automotive universe. From its base trim level and its 3.0L flat-six engine, which develops 370 hp and 331 lb.-ft. of torque, to the GT3 RS track beast with its 500 hp and 338 lb.-ft., there are no less than 24 flavours of the 911. Actually, 25 if we count the new 911 R that made its world debut in Geneva, and that is making its North American premiere in New York.
The R gets the 4.0L, flat-six engine of the GT3 RS, which develops the same output. However, its curb weight is 1370 kg, or 50 less than the RS, so performance and handling are slightly enhanced. While the GT3 RS is only offered with a PDF automated transmission, the R is only available with a seven-speed manual gearbox—the good old row-it-yourself type. No elevated rear spoiler on the R either. It can blast from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 320 km/h.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first 911 R, which appeared in 1967, only 911 units of this sports car will be produced. Come on, let’s reach between the cushions of our couches and collectively buy one. It costs $211,000, so that’s only 105 500 toonies.
