The main reason for buying a pickup truck is usually the box: the thing that enables you to transport such varied loads as building materials, an ATV, plants and anything else that won’t fit in a more conventional vehicle. In most cases, the first is 78.9 inches long, and the extended bed measures 97.8 inches long. These dimensions are more or less standard for regular-cab and crew-cab pickups. Be sure to select the one that will meet your needs. For example, if you plan to transport a snowmobile or a motorcycle, and the bed proves to be too short for that purpose, you may end up less than pleased. If there is any doubt, it is always wiser to choose the long box and avoid disappointment.
In recent years, truck manufacturers have made a real effort to provide cargo tie-down systems, which often include movable anchorage points located in grooves in the box walls, and in some cases lateral slots that will hold partitions to keep different kinds of cargo separated. Some brands offer storage space between the inner and outer walls of the box, which enhances the vehicle’s usefulness. If you are the kind of owner who likes to ride in a spotless truck, you will need to order a plastic bed liner to protect the metal of the box. Some trucks come standard with a durable coating to guard against scratches and dents.
