Volkswagen's Answer To Honda's New Guinness Record
At the same time Honda was reaping a Guinness World Record for crossing Europe with as little fuel as possible, Volkswagen was busy doing the same thing in the US. Using a Golf TDI Clean Diesel, the German manufacturer managed to drive through all 48 states while averaging 2.89 litres per 100 km.
Automotive journalist Wayne Gerdes was behind the wheel, accompanied by Bob Winger, an electronics engineer. During the 16 day trip, the duo only had to pay $294 USD for fuel. Not bad considering they criss-crossed the entire country!
